To Lash 100% Coverage or Not

Posted inBuild, Grow

Ahhh – one of the most controversial topics in our industry… 100% coverage!

So, does it make sense to cover 100% of the natural lashes? And why does it matter?

There is a common belief that lash artists should be getting 100% coverage when applying extensions. By definition this means that every single natural lash should have an extension put on it.

For the sake of this argument, let me tell you why this concept of 100% coverage is flawed to begin with.

Ask yourself these questions:

Is it always safe to apply an extension to every single natural lash?

In your 100% coverage sets or fills – do you get every single inner corner lash? Do you lash the baby lashes?

Are you lashing 100% of lashes EVERY SINGLE TIME?

What about a client who comes in with A TON of natural lashes and you’ve only blocked out 2.5 hours for her full set, are you able to lash 100% coverage?

As you may know, I am the founder of The Lashpreneur Society, which is a group business coaching program. This is a popular topic in the group that we often discuss.

And one thing that some lash artists who always promise 100% coverage fail to ignore…

99% coverage is not the same as 100% coverage.

And that’s just the way it is! If you have made any exception to not add in an extension on a natural lash, even when it’s in the best interest of the client – then you are NOT lashing at 100% coverage. Any claim that you are is false advertising.

Should you aim for 100% coverage?

Yes and no.

Yes – because the clients want to achieve the look of lash extensions, or enough for them to be noticeable. You should work toward max amount of coverage possible to get the client their desired result. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean 100% coverage.

No – because our natural lashes and our eyes are not symmetrical. Meaning one eye most of the time has more natural lashes than the other. Each client and each eye is different. Therefore 100% coverage is not sustainable or realistic for each and every client.

Does it make sense for your business and do clients really care?

Because our clients are snowflakes and no two are alike – how can you regulate your services times to be profitable if you promise 100% coverage?

A client with 80-100 natural lashes per eye is going to take less time than a client with 150-200 natural lashes per eye. How could you ever predict how much time to block out for either client if you’ve never sat down and looked at their lashes until they’ve arrived for their first appointment with you?

So in order to have a business that maximizes your time so you can maximize your revenue – you need to have standard service times. Like 2 hours for a classic full set or 1.5 hours for a hybrid fill.

Here is some food for thought: If your client is equally happy with the results at 87% coverage as they are at 100% coverage – are you getting any more value from the extra 15-30 minutes it takes for you to go from 87-100% coverage?

No – the result to the client is the same. The only person who knows the difference is you. So if you can save 15-30 minutes per appointment, and still have a client over the moon – would you?
