Why Adding More Services to Your Menu is Not Going to Save Your Business

So, you have invested $100s, if not $1000s of dollars in trainings to learn your craft. You’ve spent an equal amount in getting all of the supplies, equipment and fancy decor to make your business super functional AND Pinterest-worthy. You’ve launched your business, started running Groupon, Yelp and Facebook Ads. Now what? Your books are still filled with crickets and white noise and new full sets are trickling in like a Chinese Water Torture experiment.

Sound familiar?

If I’m a betting woman (and let’s face it… as a business coach, I err on the side of caution and low risk business decisions so betting is not a part of my beauty business DNA) I would bet that you are toying with getting more skilled training to add higher priced services to your menu. Microblading, Volume Lashes, Lash Lifting or Tinting, those are HOT services right now and they totally compliment eyelash extensions, right? Getting those trainings are a sure-fire way to grow your beauty business to new levels…

Or not.

Adding more services to your menu thinking it will save your business and create more demand for you and your lash business is a lie a lot of lash artists tell themselves. I call this the “Trying to have a baby to save a marriage” mindset.

 If your current services are not in demand and your books are not filling up with both regular and recurring clients, no matter how many options or services you offer, you’re still not fixing the core issue of why you spend more time browsing your Instagram feed than actually working on paying clients. The core issue of why you are not getting new clients is not the variety of services offered, it’s that nobody knows your business exists or you haven’t given them a reason to care. Your core issue is a lack of marketing, not variety.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a HUGE proponent of continuing education and perfecting your craft, but being a damn good lash artist doesn’t do enough of the leg work to get client’s lining up to wear your work, credit cards in hand. Adding on any additional services, and incurring more debt to pay for those other service options, is detrimental to your financial health until you start to address the business side of being a lash artist. If you fix the core of your lash business slump by learning how to become a better business owner, you’ll have the flexibility, freedom, and finances to afford the higher priced services and their training AND you’ll already have the customer base to upsell your new services to. That’s a wise investment of your time and money.

My recommendation is to work on your craft and practice, practice, practice while you invest in becoming a savvier business owner who has no problem filling her books regardless of what services you are offering.
